Jack Langade wrote about Prophet Muhammad that "he used to fix his clothes himself". What a great man he was! He was humble, honest, truthful, generous, sincere, ate very little, wore moderate clothes, mended his own shoes, prayed day and night, sought God’s satisfaction, did not look for any high position of authority or to be head of a state which would interest most men, nor did he run after fame or any kind of privileges whatsoever. Historical records reveal that his qualities were acknowledged by both his friends and his opponents in every aspect of his life. What a great man he was!!! Had he not been so, he wouldn't have gained the respect of the tough Arabs. He would not have been able to lead them and live with them for 23 years. These Arabs were tough, harsh, bigheaded, proud, very decent and dignified, and very hard to be led. A hero is the man who won them over and managed to lead them and gather them around him. Had they not seen those aspects of greatness, nobility and magnitude in him, they wouldn't have even listened nor followed him. And I believe that a crowned Caesar with all his flamboyant clothes couldn’t have gained the love and loyalty and obedience of the Arabs the way that the prophet Muhammad did. The historians describe him as a quiet, peaceful and meditative man who had the ability to arbitrate in disputes. Even the Jews and those who disbelieved in his message accepted him as an arbitrator in their personal conflicts because of his scrupulous impartiality. Being a religious person, he enjoyed often times meditating in the Cave of Hira near Mekkah as he wanted to fleed away from the corruption of the society. He was born an orphan and raised by his uncle who had not so much to offer of the richness of this world so the prophet didn’t have the chance to go to school and learn about business and philosophy but in the end he has become the ruler of Arabia, thanks to God. Yes the illiterate prophet with his dynamic personality and his wisdom given by God altered, refined and uplifted an entire nation. He was a perfect model for human life.
Islam Influence on Arabs
God has enlightened the Arabs by the means of Islam and revitalized their nation as they were “wild men, bursting ever and anon into quarrel, without any right worth and manhood” (Carlyle in Heroes and Hero-Worship). God has sent them Muhammad with the word and message of God in order to teach them and show them practically a new way of life, as well as explaining to them the meaning of this life. As it is expressed in the Quran, God created man to worship Him, and Him alone. But there are many ways to worship God. Of course a man’s first duty in life is to pray but the meaning of worship goes deeper than that. Every simplest action an individual performs should be to gain God’s satisfaction and approval, which consequently benefit the whole humanity. Every deed should be made justly with pure intents and honesty. Faith is as important as the actions. One cannot praise his faith at the expense of deeds. Likewise, one cannot act at the expense of his belief. The foundation of Islam is accurate faith and correct actions. Many times it has been said in the Quran “Those who believe and do good, they alone shall enter paradise”.
The Prophet influenced the people by preaching the Word of God and by putting his teachings into practice in his own life. He showed the proud people how to be humble, and how they can use their weaknesses as a power to do good deeds. He was a fierce shinning light illuminating the darkness by giving hope to the poor, to orphans and to all those in need. A system of charity used by the name of Zakat was established by the prophet of Islam and orphanages have sprung for the first time under his teachings. In an age of barbarism, the Prophet of Islam taught self-control and discipline to the Arabs. It is expressed in the Holy Qur’an that who suppresses their anger and overlook what other people do, God loves the kindly (Imran 3:134). Democracy and equality between the people was (and still is) an important aspect of Islam. This religion brought together all worshippers, King and peasants kneeled down and bowed their heads to the floor in the mosque to pray and proclaim God’s greatness. Until today, people of different nations and different culture gather together for the pilgrimage in Mecca. Men and women, White and black, rich and poor, young and old, Chinese, Europeans, Africans, Indians, Persians, unite themselves every year as one divine family without any distinction of position or wealth in order to obey God’s orders and worship Him. Not only did the transformation of moral values and conduct of life occurred inside the walls of the mosque but also in the daily affairs outside the place of worship. Islam change the thinking of the people in such a drastic way that the most noble and pure among the Arabs would offer their daughters in marriage to a black slave.
Within a century of the prophet’s death, Islam had spread to Spain in the West and as far as China in the East. Before he died at the age of 63, the greater part of Arabia was Muslim. The Muslim state went through many different phases thanks to the light of graciousness, nobility, and help incited by Islam. The light of truth and true guidance of God had risen on half of the world and the great faith has been the source of life and strength. The nation will maintain in this status as long as it follows the absolute Truth with certainty and the Guidance with belief. When I read the text about Arabs, I remembered the books in the Old Testament that say "you will be replaced by a stupid nation, you will be replaced by a non-nation, and from the mountains of Faran, 10 thousand saints will be sent" (Faran mountains is the place Hagar lived with her son, and the only nation by which an era was called "Jahilia", which means idiocy and ignorance/lack of knowledge, was the Arab nation. Islam expanded peacefully and rapidly due to its doctrine of the Oneness of God and one important teaching of the Quran is that God gave man intelligence and urges him to use it powerfully in order to understand, create and advance in life in a successful and positive way. According to the Prophet (pbuh) “seeking knowledge is an obligation for every Muslim man and woman”. So at the age of ignorance Universities and great civilizations flourished by the power of the Word of God and by the dynamic personality of the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh). Islam affected the whole world in a way that it permitted scientists and scholars to advance in medicine, mathematics, physics, astronomy, geography, architecture, art, literature and history. Because of Islam, algebra, Arabic numerals and the number zero (fundamental in mathematics) were created and transmitted to medieval Europe. Sophisticated instruments such as the astrolabe, the quadrant and accurate navigational maps were also invented by Muslim scientists. In his book The Making of humanity, Robert Briffalut concludes that: “The debt of our science to the Arab does not consist in startling discoveries or revolutionary theories. Science owes a great deal more to the Arab culture: it owes its existence”. Many verses in the Quran invite the man to observe closely the nature, to meditate upon it and to learn from it. Consequently, Muslims began to do so and this gave birth to the scientific spirit of observation and experiments.
